Finding Our Independence

 

BBQ, fireworks, and family…the recipe for a great Fourth of July. This Wednesday our country will celebrate one of our greatest holidays. Yes, the three things mentioned above are part of what makes this holiday great, but there is much more. This holiday is unique only to our country. On July 4, 1776 the founding fathers of this country established the “Declaration of Independence.” The declaration stated that the thirteen colonies would be independent from Great Britain.

   The declaration states, We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

   Our country was founded upon Godly principles. Even our forefathers said that there are certain rights that every human has been given by our Creator.

  1. Life: Isn’t that what Jesus said during His ministry? “I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life” (John 5:24). Jesus came offering life to all who believed in His Father and in His commands.
  2. Liberty: the definition of liberty is “the state of being free.” Again Jesus said that when you believe in the truth (the words of Christ) that “the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32). We will be free from sin in our lives when we follow the law of God. Through the blood of Christ, we have been liberated from our sins.
  3. Pursuit of Happiness: Before Jesus left this world, He told His apostles, “These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full” (John 15:11). Christ is the root of all happiness.

   I love this country. I love what our founding fathers have done for us, but I am especially grateful for what our God has done for us. This country was founded on the principles of the Bible.
