Remembering the Fallen

Tuesday is the eleven year anniversary of when this country was rocked by a series of terrorist attacks. I’m sure all of you can remember where you were, what you were doing, and who you were with on that morning. Four planes crashed that day: two at the World Trade Centers, one at the Pentagon, and one in a field in Pennsylvania. Nearly 3,000 people lost their lives that day. For the following days, weeks, and months, it seemed like time stood still. Nothing else in the world mattered. We were attacked on our own soil. Something that hasn’t happened since Pearl Harbor. I’ve never seen this country more united than I did after September 11th. Flags hung from every house and in every widow. Bumper stickers saying “United We Stand” could be found on nearly every car. I have never seen or heard of this country being more united than it was after 9/11. This week we will remember the 3,000 lost lives that turned our world upside down.

However, there was one life that has changed our world forever. I often think of the men and women who stood at the foot of the cross. Did they remember the cross like we remember 9/11? I’m sure that if you asked Peter, he knew exactly where he was, what he was doing, and who he was with when Jesus was hanging on the cross. I’m sure in the days, weeks, and months that followed, the men and women who believed in Christ were rattled to the core! 3,000 lives changed this country, but one life changed this world! Paul tells Timothy to “remember that Jesus Christ…was raised from the dead according to my gospel” (2 Tim. 2:8). Remember the perfect life that was taken. Remember the perfect life that He lived. Remember the sayings and teachings that the greatest teacher gave. Remember the miracles and works He did in His Father’s name. Remember why He was hung on the cross. Even Jesus, as He took the bread and fruit of the vine said, “do this in remembrance of Me” (Luke 22:19).

We love memorials in this country. There is a memorial for almost everything: past presidents, past generals, fallen soldiers, wars, 9/11, etc. All of those memorials help draw our attention to the great things certain men and women have done, or lives that were lost during a tragic war. However, there is one memorial that supersedes all other memorials: the memorial of our Lord Jesus Christ. Once a year we remember September 11th, but once a week we remember the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus. Remember the great things He has done for us. Remember the great home he has prepared for us. Let us stand united in Christ, remembering the life that He gave.
