We Are Family

This past week, Brooke and I drove down to Southern California to spend Thanksgiving with my family. It’s always fun getting together with people you love. We all get along and we love just sitting around the dinner table telling jokes and reminiscing on when we were younger. Many of you probably did the same thing this past week as you sat around the table to eat a gigantic feast. The Lord’s family is much like our secular families. We gather together, eat a meal, and reminisce about memories.

We gather together on the first day of the week, not to eat lunch or dinner, but to eat something that means much more than just a common meal. “On the first day of the week we came together to break bread” (Acts 20:7a).  We gather as a family of believers in Jesus Christ, to partake of the Lord’s Supper, and to reminisce about the sacrifice that He made on behalf of our sins.

As family, we have responsibilities towards each other.

  1. We glorify God together (Psalm 102:22).
  2. We are to be devoted to one another in brotherly love (Rom. 12:10).
  3. We are to be unified like a family (Rom. 12:5).
  4. We are to encourage one another (Eph. 4:29).
  5. We are to be thankful for one another (Phil 1:3).
  6. We are to get together regularly on the first day of the week (Acts 20:7; 1 Cor. 16:1).
  7. We are to supply for each other’s needs (Acts 4:31-37)

Together we make the family of Jesus Christ. Let’s not forget to treat each other like family. I enjoy each moment I get to spend with my brothers and sisters in Christ. Individually we are many, but together we are one.
