Why Is Homosexuality Such a Big Deal?

There is a growing debate in this state and in this country. Homosexuals want freedom to marry who they want. They want the economic benefits that regular married couples get. Homosexuals have been pushing for equal rights in this country and state for many years now, but a few weeks ago the Supreme Court granted them their victory. Christians all over the nation have voiced their concern and opinions of outrage. In return, supporters of same-sex marriage have called Christians (and other people who oppose same-sex marriage) bigots, haters, ignorant, and intolerant. Why have so many arguments come from this one issue? Why have so many people fought so hard for or against same-sex marriage? It begs the question, “Why is homosexuality such a big deal?”

I can only give an answer from a Biblical point of view. Homosexuality’s a big deal because it’s a sin. Homosexuality is a sin just like stealing, lying, disobeying parents, drunkenness, adultery, fornication, and gossip. Paul describes to us in the book of Romans that “even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due” (Rom. 1:26-27). We see it’s not natural for a man to be with a man or a woman to be with a woman.

Not only is it a sin to be a homosexual, but it’s also a sin for those who approve of those living in lives of sin. Paul would also say, “those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them” (Romans 1:32).

Why is homosexuality such a big deal? It’s a big deal because it goes directly against what God had planned for His people. It goes directly against what the Bible says. As Christians, we have made a promise to God to live our lives by His word and His commands. How can I uphold that promise to God, but yet approve of people living in blatant lives of sin?

Just because I, as a Christian, disagree with homosexuality does not make me a bigot or a hater. Just because I disagree with homosexuality does not make me ignorant or intolerant. I disagree with all sin. Anyone who sins, whether it’s homosexuality, lying, stealing, etc. needs to hear the word of God and repent. As Christians, we have a responsibility to uphold God’s word and truth. As Christians, we have a responsibility to shed light on the darkness of sin. As Christians, we cannot claim to love God and follow God, but still decide to agree with homosexuality. How can we when the Bible speaks so clearly against it?

Why is homosexuality such a big deal? Because God said so. God wishes that no man should perish, but that all should come to repentance (2 Pet. 3:9), but at the same time, there is no room in God’s Kingdom for sin. God can offer forgiveness. God can help you cure the sin in your life. God’s kingdom is open to all who are saved from whatever sin they are dealing with.
